New Delhi: Global Watchdog, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has released a report which, in 2018, there is a ranking of the countries in the world according to the media's independence. In this ranking, India has dropped two points to 138. In the report, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Troll Force' has been blamed on social media networks for targeting journalists and sharing hate stories and videos.
The report says, "India (often below the 136 ranking of 2017), 'Troll Army' often targets journalists on social media and promotes hatred statements, and shares such things as well." It has been said further, "Journalists are increasingly targeting the fundamentalist nationalists' online campaign, even the hardcore nationalists disdain them and threaten physical violence."
The report further states that at least three journalists have been targeted for their involvement in the work. It includes Gauri Lankesh's assassination in 2017. The report says, "The law was also used to silence the journalists who were more critical of the government, in some cases also referred to Section 124A (Treason), under which life imprisonment is underway."
However, in this report it was said that no journalist has been convicted of 'sedition' till now, but self-control is strengthened by this threat. It also states that Kashmiri journalists have often been targeted for the violence of soldiers working with the tacit consent of the central government.
