India has filed fewer patents than China, US

The main reason for filing a small number of patent applications by India is that the private sector has less expenditure on research and development, apart from this, there is also a reason for not knowing about the benefits of patent systems, individuals, educational institutions and industry.


NEW DELHI: India has filed a number of patents in comparison to the other major countries filing patents. This information was given by the central government in the Lok Sabha. In response to a question from Hari Manjhi and PK Biju, Minister of State for Science and Technology YS Chaudhary said that according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) 2016, India has registered only 45 thousand 658 research papers (patents).

He informed that during this period, China has 11 lakh 1864, the US has 5 lakh 89 thousand 410, Japan 3 lakh 18 thousand 721, the Republic of Korea filed two lakh 13 thousand 694 patents.
YS Chowdhury said, "The main reason for filing a small number of patent applications by India is to reduce the expenditure on research and development by private sector, besides not knowing the benefits of patent systems, individuals, educational institutions and industry. There is a reason for this.

At the same time, he said that according to the WPO data, the number of indigenous and foreign patents filed in India is very small compared to other countries.
